You don't have to have an art major in order to recognize the names Salvador Dali and Pablo Picasso. Courtesy of Dr. Wayne and Nona Yakes of Englewood, Colorado, the Fort Collins Museum of Art will be displaying their private collection of the two artists drawings and sketches. The installation will be featured in the main gallery starting on November 3rd and running until January 2nd, 2018.
Doctor Yakes, a neurovascular surgeon and radiologist, is also a fine art collector who has loaned works from his collection to museums and has made considerable donations, not only to society in his profession, but also monetarily. The Central Catholic High School in San Antonio, Texas named their athletic and convocation center after Dr. Yakes and his mother, Frances after contributing $5 million to the school.
Yakes' collection began in 1982 and is mainly centered around Russian art but also includes many other international works.
The doctor's philosophy on art is, “The ‘thread’ that connects my collection is the intense intellectuality and novel thought that is required to spawn their creations, their supreme technical abilities to accurately render that which they envision without structural compromise, and the pedantically unique attraction that is culturally inherent in each area of the world of the groups of artists that I chose to collect to be most representative of those unique traits. “This has led to my modern Russian collection, my European collection, my Israeli-Middle East collection, my Oriental-Asian collection, and my American-Canadian collection. Even excluding race, these geopolitical regions are distinctive culturally, religiously, politically, in the culinary arts and educationally. This then compels multivariate influences in these artist groups profoundly influencing ones’ education, worldview, culture, loyalties, directly impacting the expression of each region’s approach and appreciation to art itself; ‘id est, sui generis!’" - Wayne Yakes
Be sure to seize the opportunity to see this it collection as it will be on display for a limited time.
